Adult Scoliosis: The Result of an Untreated Spinal Curve in Adolescent Years

Scoliosis is most common among adolescents, but there are occasions when adults start seeing the symptoms that leads to the diagnosis of scoliosis. This particular condition is quite common, but if it's left uncorrected and untreated then it can definitely worsen. Because scoliosis is more common among younger people, the symptoms are usually brushed off as "growing pains" which will delay the appropriate care needed to correct the spine.

Many people have heard the term scoliosis, but are actually quite unfamiliar with what it means. Normally starting in childhood, scoliosis is a sideways curve in the spine. The exact cause is typically unknown, but it's normally detected by a change in posture, uneven shoulder heights, or a loss in balance structure.

Regular chiropractic exams will help reveal the small problems of scoliosis before they become significantly serious. It's unfortunate to know the most common treatment approach for this curvature has been to wait and see how bad the condition gets. By this time, the scoliosis has progressed too far and it may be too late to correct without surgery.

The natural treatment approach is chiropractic. Spinal adjustments are usually combined with corrective exercises, and if the condition is detected early enough research shows there is an excellent success rate in chiropractic treatment.

Osteoarthritis is a main cause for adult scoliosis. The vertebrae and discs will degenerate and weaken on one side more than the other causing the spine to curve. Adults who may have had surgery to treat scoliosis at an adolescent age may continue to struggle with symptoms into their adult life, therefore causing adult scoliosis.

It is common for the pain of scoliosis to be present in adulthood because the natural flexibility that younger people have diminishes over time, and the muscles that compensated for the spinal curve become overworked. The treatment for adult scoliosis solely surrounds the idea of relieving the pain. If the spinal curve has been untreated for years, it can cause more misalignments in the vertebrae and interfere with proper functioning of the nerves.

Chiropractic care is the perfect treatment for restoring optimal functioning of the nervous system and correcting misalignments in the body structure. After a few spinal manipulations, the nerve function will improve resulting in the improvement of posture and the increase of muscle tone.

It is difficult to restore the spine to its perfect position with adult scoliosis simply because of the symptoms being ignored. Chiropractic adjustments, however, can help the muscles and nerves begin to do their jobs so the body can start healing itself naturally.
